If you haven’t seen the series, City of Men, or it’s been awhile since your last watch, you might want to binge the show because the series will return to television screens in early 2017! The show will continue to follow best friends, Laranjinha and Acerola as they venture through adulthood.
The Brazilian series was developed by Kátia Lund and Fernando Meirelles; the same team behind the critically acclaimed 2002 film, City of God. The series followed teenagers Acerola (Douglas Silva) and Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) through their day to day life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. With episodes surrounding gang wars, drugs, and police brutality, the show rang similar to City of God but through the eyes of teenagers came a lighter tone with episode about young romance, partying, and friendship. After the finale, the 2007 film by the same name was released. It followed Laranjinha through his journey to find and then build a relationship with his estranged father while Acerola found himself in the middle of a gang war.
The 2017 series will be entitled, City of Men, The Return. Through four chapters, the series will follow the men as they raise their children Davi and Clayton. If you watched the series or the film, you’ll remember that Acerola wasn’t the most responsible with his young son, Clayton and his wife Cristiane left him to pursue a job in another city. It’ll be exciting to see Douglas Silva, Darlan Cunha, possibly Camila Monteiro, the actress who played Cristiane, and the two young new comers; maybe this will be the start of a new spin-off series!
The new episodes are written by George Moura and Daniel Adjafre and will be directed by Pedro Morelli whose projects include 2013’s Sheep’s Clothing and 2015’s Zoom; he’s also the son of Paulo Morelli who directed the film, City of Men.
